Signs Your Furnace Is Not Working Properly

It is important to have a furnace that works efficiently. However, when this appliance ages, it may need repairs or replacement. It is important to know the warning signs when a furnace is having problems.

Furnace Warning Signs

1. Weird Smells or Noises

Sometimes a furnace will rattle and make weird noises. A gas furnace may emit strong smells as well. These are both sign to call your HVAC specialist because repairs may be necessary.

2. Old Age

A furnace will not last forever. Under normal circumstances, a furnace will need repairs after 10 years of use. The older the unit, the more likely it is to need major fixes or replacement.

3. Thermostat Problems

When a furnace keeps turning on and off, it may be a sign of problems with the thermostat. Another signal may be that your home never seems to warm to the desired temperature. This will be a simple fix that is easily detected by an HVAC professional.

4. Yellow Flame

The furnace’s flame should always be a stable blue color. If there is an orange hue to the flame, this means there is dirt in the burner. This may lead to a dangerous gas leak and should be addressed immediately.

To prevent problems, it is wise to get an annual furnace inspection. It is recommended to schedule an appointment during late fall as the weather is turning cooler. Tending to problems early will provide efficient service during the cold winter months. Proper maintenance is also helpful. To maintain efficiency, it is wise to replace or clean the furnace’s filter. This prevents blockages and limits the pollutants that are allowed to circulate throughout the home. It is also smart to check for obstructed airflow. Furniture or other objects may block vents and cause problems with your appliance.

To make sure your furnace is in proper working order, it is essential to schedule an appointment with a qualified HVAC technician. Call your local heating and furnace contractor for an inspection, which will detect problems early. Knowing the warning signs will help you understand when repairs or replacement is necessary.
