4 HVAC Maintenance Tips for the Spring Season

There is no better time than the spring season to have HVAC maintenance done, among other home maintenance tasks. After all, a well-maintained HVAC system is essential for the comfort of your home. In today’s post, Kemnitz Air Conditioning & Heating Inc. shares HVAC maintenance tips that you should add to your spring maintenance checklist.

1. Change the air filter. The air filter in your HVAC system catches dust and other indoor air pollutants. They usually get filled to capacity every three months, or as often as once a month during seasons of heavy HVAC usage. Coming from the winter season, your HVAC will likely need new air filters. Fortunately, air filters are user-replaceable, which means you can purchase a new air filter — making sure it’s the same size — and easily replace it yourself. The air filters on ductless systems are washable, and should be inspected every couple of months.

2. Test the thermostat. Electronic devices can step out of sync with the devices they’re paired with; your thermostat is no different. Make sure to test it every once in a while, adjusting the temperature settings by a few degrees and checking if the HVAC system adjusts its output accordingly. If not, follow troubleshooting steps as prescribed in its user guide. The most that you’ll need to do is reset the thermostat to factory settings and/or replace its battery.

3. Clean the condenser coils. The condenser coils are located in the HVAC system’s outdoor enclosure. Dirt and dust can block their capability to vent heat, which means they need to be cleaned every once in a while. The same goes for the thin aluminum fins surrounding the outdoor unit. It’s important to note that some HVAC systems need to be cleaned by an air conditioning and heating repair professional, so make sure you check the user guide first.

4. Have the air ducts cleaned. Small particles can make their way into the air ducts and accumulate in areas sight unseen, and leaks may develop in the same way. Both can affect indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency. If you haven’t had your air ducts inspected and cleaned in the past five years, schedule an appointment with a professional HVAC cleaning service.
