3 Possible Reasons Your AC Is Leaking

To repair air conditioner leaks, it is important to understand why it is happening in the first place. In this article, premier Kemnitz air conditioning technicians discuss three possible reasons you are experiencing AC leaks and what you can do to correct the issue.

1. You Have a Dirty Air Filter.

An air filter full of dirt, dust, and other contaminants is a big no-no. It not only forces the cooling unit to work harder and longer than normal, but also means worn-out components or even total equipment failure. In addition, a filthy air filter can block the airflow that passes over the evaporator coil, causing it to become abnormally cold and eventually freeze. When the frozen coil melts, the drain pan can overflow and cause leaks.

Fortunately, this is an easy problem to avoid. Ensure your air filter is cleaned or changed at least once every three months. Do it more frequently if you have pets or are allergic to dust.

2. You Have a Clogged Drain Line.

If your unit leaks inside your home, your condensate drain line is likely clogged. This is because dirt, debris, or mold can accumulate in this component over time. When this happens, condensation is not able to escape and drain to the outside of your home. The drain line then becomes backed up, producing leaks.

One way to prevent this type of leak is to regularly clean the drain line to ensure there are no blockages that can hinder condensation from getting out. An air conditioning and heating repair expert will perform this task during routine maintenance.

3. Your Refrigerant Level Is Low.

When the refrigerant charge gets lower, the pressure inside the cooling unit also decreases. One effect of this issue is that the evaporator coil can start to freeze and cause leakage. You may also notice that your equipment is not cooling your space like usual. Have your air conditioner inspected and maintained properly to avoid such problems from happening.
